Cupcake Trend Forecast: Sweet is out, Savory is in!

At the beginning of the year, Heirloom-LA made quite a splash with their announcement of the “Lasagna Cupcake” which inspired a heated debate over what makes a cupcake a cupcake. Some people called it a gimmick, while others called it genius, but one thing is certain, it planted the seed for a whole new generation of savory treats which are here to stay.

Arguing the fact that the “Lasagna Cupcake” was simply appetizer sized lasagna baked into a cupcake shape inspired chefs to take on the challenge of creating cupcakes that still resembled the key ingredients of a baked cake, a whipped frosting and a delightful garnish, all while incorporating extremely non-traditional flavors into the mix. We can thank these cupcake wizards for introducing the “Maple Bacon Cupcake,” the “Fried Chicken ‘n’ Waffle Cupcake,” and the “McNuggetini Cupcake” to our lives.
