With a surprisingly "drinks free" evening and the first half of the Top Chef season finale on Tivo, I decided to treat myself to a little nom treat. Having recently been reminded of the joy that is Grilled Cheese month (not that it's now) I knew that's exactly what I was in the mood for.
However sweet was slowly beating out savory on my mental taste buds. So I decided to go with a Gruyere & Granny Smith Apple sandwich, grilled on a sesame & sunflower sourdough from Trader Joe's.
For the dipping (because everyone knows grilled cheese must come with soup) I opted for a sweet potato concoction. Having not been a fan of TJ's soup, I added a few extra flavors myself which made it a perfect accompaniment to the warm apples & cheese. A dash of nutmeg and a teaspoon or two of cinnamon with a dollop of butter, and a scattered chopping of apples. It tasted like Thanksgiving and Christmas all rolled into one.
We finished it off with an Italian Grapefruit & Vodka spritzer for a delightful fall dinner for two!
